Compare IT asset management tools

Tagaris against Snipe-IT, GLPI, Reftab and AssetTiger in detail, with a summary of the larger platforms.

An asset register is only useful while it is accurate, so the features that matter most are the ones that keep it accurate: feeds from your device management, renewal alerts and a workable audit routine. This page is maintained by the Tagaris team and was last reviewed in August 2026. Where a competitor is the better choice we say so, and if you find an error, email contact@goodhallsolutions.co.uk and we will correct it. For the fuller written comparison with Snipe-IT, see Tagaris vs Snipe-IT.

Where Tagaris stands alone

Four things no other tool on this page offers. The chart below has the detail.

The register updates itself

Devices come in from Microsoft Intune and Jamf for review, and people from Microsoft Entra ID. No other self-hosted tool here does this. Free while in beta.

Built-in backups with restore

Scheduled encrypted backups with in-app restore and optional offsite copies. Snipe-IT and GLPI leave backups to you; the cloud tools hold your data on their servers.

Serial number intelligence

Dell, Lenovo and Apple serial formats are recognised, with a link to the maker's warranty lookup. No other tool on this page does this.

QR labels for rooms and locations

Print labels for rooms and locations as well as assets, and run a physical audit by scanning the room and confirming what is in it.

The close peers

A tick means included, with a note where it needs qualifying. Paid means available on a paid tier. A dash means the vendor does not publish the answer.

Vendor-run means the service is hosted by the vendor, so server-side concerns like backups sit with them. Serial number intelligence means Dell, Lenovo and Apple serial formats are recognised, with links to the maker's warranty lookup. The Tagaris mobile app is an iPhone app in development, with Android to follow; scanning a printed label with a phone camera already opens the asset's page in the browser. Hosted Tagaris is arranged by email.

Why pay for Tagaris when Snipe-IT is free?

You may not need to. The Tagaris free tier is the full register for one administrator, with no asset limit and no export limit, so for a homelab or a one-person IT function both products cost nothing. Snipe-IT offers unlimited users and open source; Tagaris offers the device feeds, the built-in backups and a current interface. Run whichever fits.

A Team licence, from £199 a year, adds multiple users with roles, Microsoft single sign-on and an audit log. Snipe-IT includes multiple users at no charge, so the licence fee buys the running costs you avoid: the product is maintained for you, the register updates from Intune or Jamf rather than by hand, and support comes from the developer. If open source is a requirement, run Snipe-IT; the import preset will be here if you change your mind.
